INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana water customers are being urged to conserve water as a heat wave continues to strain the state’s water supply.
Indianapolis officials instructed customers to stop watering their lawns until Sunday because customers were overloading the system. Indianapolis Water officials say the company pumps an average of 140 million gallons each day, but it was on track to pump more than 220 million gallons Wednesday.
Carmel officials stopped softening water before it’s sent to customers and urged residents to reduce their water use so the city has enough water pressure.
The heat wave sent Wednesday’s temperatures well into the 90s and created heat indexes that topped 119 in Peru, 116 in Lafayette, 114 in Indianapolis and 118 in Seymour.
